Not every item you think is recyclable actually is, and a lot of items actually need to be dropped off at a specific site, not tossed into your recycling bins. While folks who sort through recyclables picked up by local waste management businesses are on the lookout for such items, it helps everyone – including the environment – to know if and where common household items can be recycled.

Eau Claire County Recycling and Sustainability Coordinator Regan Watts said the top recycling mistakes they see are:

Within Eau Claire County, only plastics #1 and #2 are curbside recyclable; All other recyclables must be discarded through other facilities and/or programs. So, what items can you put curbside for recycling?

It is important to note that all items accepted into the recycling process must be clean and dry, and not bagged. As noted on the City of Eau Claire's website, when folks bag their recycling, it is most likely to get tossed into the garbage. Plastic bags, electronics, cords, clothing, and other non-curbside recyclables can contaminate the recycling process and can cause it to end up in the landfill.

Area Recycling Drop-sites:

Eau Claire County residents can recycle electronics and batteries for free year-round at First Choice Computer Recycling (525 Park Ridge Ct., Eau Claire), as well as small appliances and fans, vacuums, washers and dryers, laptops and TVs, cell phones, etc.
