Green H2 might work for decarbonizing certain hard-to-abate sectors of the economy, but it has a much higher hurdle to clear for transportation.

But a more fundamental issue that never seems to garner much discussion is where all the water used to crack out the H2 will come from. Once its pumped out of the water table, it won’t be returned. So GH2 facilities will compete with farmers, ranchers, other industry, residents, etc for increasingly scarce water resources. While it might be sourced from seawater, that adds the cost of desalination and limits the possible location of GH2 plants.
